Ingredients & Substitutions

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for this recipe. Scroll down to the recipe for the full ingredients list and directions.

Use old-fashioned rolled oats, not quick oats.

Boiling water helps soften the oats.

To sweeten the bread, use honey or maple syrup. For vegan, use maple syrup.

Unsalted butter adds a classic buttery flavor. Replace with coconut oil for a vegan option.

Active dry yeast helps leaven this bread.

Warm water helps activate the yeast. The water needs to be between 105 degrees and 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

All-purpose flour adds the substance. I have not tried this recipe using gluten-free flour, though it may work.

Lastly, add in a pinch of salt.

Step 5

Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. Add enough flour until the dough becomes too stiff to stir.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 to 7 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels sticky, you can add a little more flour as you knead.

Step 7

Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

Step 8

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

Step 9

Cover the loaf pan with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until it rises just above the rim of the pan.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Once preheated, bake the bread for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 11

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
