Cinnamon Streusel Oatmeal Muffin Tips

There are a few tips and tricks for making the best cinnamon streusel oatmeal muffins that you have ever had. Slight adjustments will give you an enjoyable experience that is good until the last bite.

  • Cinnamon: The aromatic spice contains subtle sweetness that enhances the taste of the whole grain oats. Cinnamon is found in the muffin batter, and also in the streusel topping.
  • Dried fruit: Raisins are a great additions that compliments the cinnamon and oats. Cranberries, dates, and figs are some variations to consider for this simple oatmeal muffin recipe.
  • Nuts: If you’re looking for a slight crunch, then add some of your favorite nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans or walnuts.
  • Oats: For a palatable texture, rolled oats or quick oats are the preferred type of oats for this muffin preparation. If using quick oats, reduce the soaking time time to about 5 minutes.
  • Sweetness: Adjust the sweetness to suit your taste preference. There is a subtle balance of sweetness in the oatmeal base and streusel topping.
  • Consistency: The muffin batter is tad bit dense compared to other recipes we have tested, but there is no concern over the muffins being dry. It’s best to not use a muffin liner because the muffin sticks to the paper. For best results, bake the muffin in a nonstick pan without a liner. The muffins are crispy outside with a moist center.
  • High heat: Begin baking on high heat to force the muffins to spring up quickly. Then, reduce the temperature to fully bake the inside of the muffins. The results are a tall muffins that have a moist center.
  • Make ahead: Oatmeal muffins are a tasty breakfast or delicious afternoon snack that can easily be meal prepped ahead of time. Enjoy at room temp, or quickly warm the muffin in the microwave, or in a hot oven.
  • Storage: Oatmeal muffins stay fresh for up to 3 days when stored in an airtight container, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw the frozen muffin in the refrigerator overnight, then bring to room temperature before eating.
